Springlike February

early morning from Green Hill
Ironically, I was hoping for nasty winter weather, because it’s hard for me to be inside on a beautiful day like today. A bad day in the woods is better than a good day most anywhere else, even in the studio.

Perhaps the unusually warm weather has been influencing my choice of subjects as I continue to turn out landscapes. I have maybe six or seven paintings going right now, and only one is a winter scene. The others are a riot of green or bright fall colors. This is one of the latter.

It’s been awhile since I painted steadily. The divorce and all the accompanying distractions put a damper on my ability to paint, somehow.

Things are finally settling out, though, and during the winter slow time, I am slowly bringing the studio back to life. Sweeping out the varmits and cobwebs, exercising my painting arm. I’m just working on some sketches and ideas for larger works, and doing a few little landscape studies. Here’s one I did last week.

Is this an exercise in Narcissism?

I know everyone else in the whole universe is either blogging or posting multiple times a day on Facebook about the minutiae of their existence. I have resisted up to this point because, frankly, I don’t think what I ate for lunch or what music I listen to is relevant to anyone else.

But I must admit that the blog format is good for one thing: keeping people who are interested in my work informed without having to make more public appearances! Also, I’m hoping that having an audience waiting for the next post might make the crucial difference between deciding whether to go to the studio and get something done and finding another way to distract myself here on the farm.

Wish me luck. Or discipline.
